Re-Konstruct Illustration Collection 2006. Artemis.

Posted: Sep 25, 06:58 pm

Artemis was the daughter of Zeus (god of sky & thunder) and Leto. She was the twin sister of Apollo. In the oldest representations of Artemis, she is known as “Potnia Theron” Queen of the Beasts. In earliest images she is illustrated as a winged goddess holding a leopard or stag. (Stag please!)

She is known as the maiden goddess of the wild and especially the forest and the hunt. Symbols associated with her include the bow and arrow. Deer and Cypress trees are also sacred to her. Artemis later became associated with the moon, while her brother Apollo is associated with the sun.

Artemis was one of the most highly revered Greek goddesses and is one of the oldest deities. I think she is one of the most beautiful, powerful and elegant characters to be found in Classical Greek Mythology.
