Re-Konstruct Abstract Collection 2006. Pygmalion and galatea

Posted: Sep 25, 06:43 pm

The story of Pygmalion and Galetea is the love story of a Sculptor who is so disgusted at the behavior of the Propoetides that he decides to carve an effigy of his perfect woman. She is often said to be carved from Ivory or marble.

Pygmalion prays to Venus to bring his creation to life. Taking pity on the infatuated sculptor Venus agrees to breathe life into the cold statue.

As Pygmalion returns to his studio he is both terrified and enraptured by what he discovers. His sublime statue melts from stone into soft flesh. It is this part of the story that I am particularly interested in, where Pygmalion is presented with the reality of his desire.

In this collection I have used line and form to show the moment both characters are united. While constructing the designs I wanted to display the integration Pygmalion and Galatea. While depicting this myth I have concentrated on the dichotomy of feeling that Pygmalion experiences as he is presented with the certain arrival of his ideal woman.
