10/08/09 - FableFleet Portraits & News
Posted: Aug 10, 07:34 pmSince December the FableFleet team have been out trawling the Portobello Road market interviewing workers of the market, or stallholders. I have adhered to quite a strict interview format to encourage good practice among the research team and myself, but also to limit the amount of influence I have on the subjects. I have been working with a various crew of people including Kate Blair, Holly Gregson, Joie de Winter, Jess Kneipp and Kitten Grayson. Interviews have been recorded in the format of Film, Photography and Sound.
The aim of the project is to gather a list of places around the market that are special to the people that make the market the experience that it is; the workers. I also wish to document the workers of the market, the history and the current state of the market. This is because Portobello market is under threat from developers who are buying up the shops on the sides of the market and pricing shop holders out. The worrying thing is that markets are one of the most unmediated, freeform public gathering spaces still left in London and Portobello along with many others is at risk from being bought up and packed up.
I have currently finished the process of interviewing subjects and have compiled some of the best photographs to see here and soon I will be editing the Fablefleet films into some coherent reel. A map acting as a working guide to the market is being designed at present and will be available at various locations on the market in late Autumn.
